Delaware Readiness Teams
Quarterly Newsletter
The Delaware Readiness Teams have been working with communities to prepare children birth through eight for school and life. We are enthusiastic to share an update on our various initiatives and upcoming events!
New Books & Resources for the
Children & Families You Serve!
The Delaware Readiness Teams have been selected by First Book to receive a grant for over 2,000 new books that will be distributed to the community during kindergarten registration month and throughout the fall.
First Book is a nonprofit social enterprise that removes barriers to quality education for all kids by providing ongoing access to new, high-quality books and educational resources to those serving kids in need.

The books received by the Delaware Readiness Teams will be distributed at upcoming kindergarten registration events and in kindergarten registration folders.

Each book will come with related guides and instructional materials for parents, educators, and caregivers to support learning and development.
More details on book titles, distribution locations, and partnerships will be shared within the coming months.

In meantime, check out the First Book website and the organization's award winning First Book Marketplace. Educators, program staff, care providers, and anyone working in a Title I school or a community program serving at least 70% low-income families can sign up for free!
Kindergarten Registration and Readiness Campaign
During the first of the 150th General Assembly, Senators Lockman and Towsend, as well as Representatives Minor-Brown, Bolden, Chukwuocha, Cooke, and Dorsey Walker introduced Senate Bill 150.

This bill would set the official recommended kindergarten registration date at least six weeks in advance of the school choice deadline, and would require all kindergarten registration forms to be available online and via paper in English and Spanish.
And although session has ended, our work is not done! Senate Bill 150 still needs your support so please take action in January when session resumes.

Click here to find your legislator and send them a personal note (sample email here) saying that you support a common statewide kindergarten registration process!
We also want to hear from you! Share your kindergarten registration experience with the Delaware Readiness Teams.

Results will be used in support for Senate Bill 150 and hep inform what supports the Delaware Readiness Teams provide in the future.

More details on upcoming kindergarten registration events in your community will be shared on
our website and Facebook page. Be sure to check back for frequent updates!
What's New With ASQ?:
Q&A with Dawn Alexander
In the spring, the Delaware Readiness Teams launched the first statewide developmental screening webpage. The webpage compiles all of the known district screening tools into a central location and provides access to a free community-screening tool for those who do not have access to district tools.

Thanks to the partnership of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware and others, the Delaware Readiness Teams are proud to say that every child and family in Delaware now has access to a developmental screening tool and the opportunity for a strong start.

The Colonial Readiness Team spearheaded this initiative in 2017 and continues to push for greater access to developmental screenings. We caught up with Dawn Alexander, team lead for the Colonial Readiness Team, to learn more about their role as leaders and early adopters of this initiative as well as their impact on Delaware.

Tucker Signing Strategies for Reading provides a multi-sensory approach to
decoding. Children learn hand signals that prompt associations between letters
and the sounds they represent. This strategy is appropriate for young children
just learning letter names and letter/sound associations as well as older
children who are struggling with reading.
